Homespun, a 1790's log, stone and brick house on 466 acres, was originally the home of John Miller. In 1815, the property was left to his son, Godfrey, and daughter, Rebecca. Upon her marriage in 1824, Homespun became the residence of Rebecca Miller and her husband, John N. Bell. The home and grounds remained in the Miller/Bell family until near the end of the Civil War when John N. Bell, a prisoner of war, lost the farm to creditors. Stewart Bell Sr., a grandson of John N. Bell, bought the property and paid off the debt 75 years later.

  Homespun Gifts and Gardens is located in a charming 1790 farmhouse in historic Frederick County, Virginia. The two-storey log, stone and brick building is a Virginia Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

 
  Homespun opened to the public in November 2003. Visitors and customers include historic preservationists, Civil War enthusiasts, neighbors and travelers who simply enjoy a casual shopping experience in a country setting.

  Homespun Gifts and Gardens, the shop housed in the historic building, specializes in hand-crafted gifts, fashion, home and garden accessories.  The work of more than 200 American craftsmen and women are represented in an inventory which includes pottery, copper lawn and garden art, cheese boards, jewelry, candles, paintings and prints, ornaments for all occasions, garden stones, stained glass, baby gifts, pillows, quilts, baskets, dolls, knitted, woven and crocheted scarves, hats, mittens, doilies and rugs, wooden bowls, boxes, salt and pepper grinders, rolling pins, pens and hand-craffted cards.

  In addition to a wide variety of antique American display pieces, the ever-changing inventory of antiques for sale often includes pie safes, kitchen tools, tin molds, cast iron, wooden bowls, butter churns, butter molds, crockery, books, linens, quilts, toys, benches, trunks, rocking chairs, tables, cabinets and spinning wheels.

Homespun Schedule for 2010


During 2010, Homespun will be a Special Events Center with at least 10 days each month of exciting, fun events.  Local artists and crafters will be present to demonstrate and sell their work.  Local musicians will perform.  Talented artists will teach their skills during special classes.  There will be teas for children and adults.  The lawn will be the focal point for garden activities.  The 2010 Season at Homespun begins Wednesday, March 17, with a St. Patrick's Day Tea for adults.  (Reservations are required.)  The Homespun Christmas Shop will be open during November and December.  For a complete schedule of events, please call Homespun at (540) 722-1396 or send your e-mail address to Homespun1790@aol.com
